Is My Fiction Right for You?
I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal because he will endure: that when the last ding-dong of doom has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still be one more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice, still talking. I refuse to accept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The poet’s, the writer’s, duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past.
— William Faulkner
Although I primarily write adult horror-thrillers, I also write fiction in several other genres, and I almost reject genre boundaries entirely. (They are useful to a limited extent.) I believe that storytelling is an evidence-based discipline that requires authors to hold themselves to high standards of craftsmanship, understand how to apply and integrate many complex principles, and invest a lot of time in every story. This makes my fiction fundamentally incompatible with nearly all publishing and marketing practices today.
Regardless of genre, my fiction is characterized by:
- Fresh takes on the core principles and forms of classic Romantic literature
- Moral seriousness without preaching or pandering
- Richly developed characters who hold strong values and who act on their values consistently
- Easy-to-read prose aimed at maximizing both thematic clarity and emotional vibrancy
- Painstaking attention to detail and believability
- Emphasis on achieving all of the above while also ensuring that the story doesn’t forget to be entertaining
In other words: If you’re tired of all the half-baked slop that dominates virtually all bookstore shelves today, you may find that my stories are more to your liking.
